Party like it is 2004 - The Year Mizzy Bender Turned 21

2004 holds the memory for the best few months of my life. The biggest turning points happened all in a very short period of time. July 18, 2004 Mizzy Bender turned 21. Looking back, I can totally understand why I fit so well in an open kind of relationship. I also realize how much I pushed away and am happy to have back! I am going to share some important details that will eventually connect to things in the future that I never saw coming.
This was the year I moved out of my parents house into my own apartment, actually it was a ranch made into a two family house. My side was an adorable square that included two bedrooms, living room and small eat in kitchen. It was the perfect spot to take my life into my own hands. Now that I am starting this story, I realize you need some of the back story (from high school) so you can fully follow the chain of events.
We Need to Go Back, Way Back
Growing up things were hectic to say the least. They certainly could have been worse, but it all shaped me into who I was and fighting to be free of. The short answer for you is that it all boils down to not feeling loved by the people that were supposed to love me. We will definitely get into that at a later date, but right now, at that time, my drive was to move out on my own as soon as I was able. I prepared by starting a hope chest when I was like 14 years old. What kid does that? I would collect all sorts of things so I was ready for that day. Eventually for Christmas, my mom would start purchasing items for my collection too or weekly she would take me to Kohls so I could purchase one piece of the kitchen sets I was collecting. They were beautiful hand painted sets that I adored. I couldn’t decide what patterns I loved most, so I settled on 3 variations, of which didn’t match at all. In great Mizzy fashion, that made perfect sense. Each one of those pieces were around $7 (that was big bucks to me at the time). Gradually I purchased enough to complete a set of four in each design. I am proud to say that by the time I was ready to move out, I had almost everything needed to set up a household.
Mizzy Was Making Moves
It was June and I had just broken up with my boyfriend. He and I started dating under crazy circumstances (again, another crazy blog to follow) in January of my senior year, 2001 all the way through June 2004. Gosh, the day I broke up with him was awful. But, he wasn’t right for me. Sadly, I didn’t have any friends except for my aunt. He would go out frequently with friends, never inviting me to come out with him. I’d sit home just waiting for him to be available to hang out with me. It was really sad. Thinking back on it, not only were we young, but I definitely came with baggage. I am not sure his friends ever really accepted that he was dating me. It left me with so many lonely days. I felt like I deserved more.
Ugh, I completely forgot about all of this. Going back in time is very interesting and the memories just start flowing so you have to bear with me as this zig zags in every direction.
Ok, so, months before the breakup, I am not exactly positive about the time frame, but I started in a secret relationship with my boss's son. Yes, that means I was cheating on my boyfriend. I know that is terrible, but I was 19-20 years old falling in the same cycles of life just with different people and different circumstances.
My boss's son was forbidden fruit. We all knew not to even consider shenanigans with one another. You see, it was me, my aunt, the son I was smitten on, and two other sons, one of which I never met, but my aunt had. We were all flirtatious cluster fucks of fun. I started at this job the day I graduated high school, 17 years old. My aunt paved the way and got me hired. I started out in the shipping department but eventually worked my way up to be the customer service rep for Estee Lauder. OMG the stories I have for you! Another incredible time in life. Anyway, We made most of their packaging labels. I was completely fascinated by the entire creation process. Not only did I learn the business from start to finish, but I saw how the labels were actually made. The guys were so awesome and would give me tutorials down the line, educating me on the layers of ink to make the complete image. It was so cool. Eventually, my aunt and I were able to bunk up, sharing an office together. She worked on special projects and helped with Estee Lauder when I needed it.
Many didn’t like the two of us. My aunt was the boss's favorite human in the world and already had some sort of beef with all the girls when I arrived. Eventually the time came to introduce me, and I quickly learned how to play the game.
